The state of dating, 2026: everyone is exhausted, and it's fixable

The numbers coming out of the dating industry this year agree on one thing: the swipe era is running on fumes.

79% of dating-app users now report dating fatigue, and 57% describe themselves as burnt out — not by dating, but by the apps themselves. The machinery of it: the photo grid, the openers that go nowhere, the matches that expire in silence.

Three shifts stand out in this year's industry research:

1. Compatibility is beating photos

Gen Z daters consistently tell researchers they want personality-first matching. Activity-based and niche platforms are the fastest-growing category, because meeting over a shared *thing* beats meeting over a shared *glance*. The swipe sorted people by face; the next generation of products sorts them by how they'd actually get along.

2. AI is both the medicine and the disease

Every major platform is adding AI matchmaking. At the same time, 58% of users say they're worried about AI-generated fake profiles — the same technology that promises better matches is eroding the trust that makes any match worth pursuing. The winners will be the products that use AI *behind* the curtain (better questions, better matching) while keeping everything the user sees verifiably human.

3. The return of doing things

Fatigue is fuelling a documented return to in-person formats — dinners, curated events, introductions through real networks. Not because apps failed to create matches, but because they failed at what comes *after* the match.
